Eating out, around Beitostølen
Let me start out in the pessimistic end.
Good restaurants and cafés is pretty much a thing for the big cities like Oslo and Stavanger etc. Particularly if you consider price.
The more remote, and the more the business in an area rely on "people returning to their cabins in weekends anyway", the less charm and value. That goes for high-end dining, the middle segment, and the simple-cheap-but-tasty places.
But some remote areas have exceptions, Beitostølen might just be one of them.
I have not tried all restaurants at Beitostølen. They are all located along the county road passing through - which in turn is Beitostølen, along with some shops.
The ones we have tried are medium priced, with acceptable but uninspiring food. I have not seen good reviews or heard otherwise, so we stopped trying at that street.
But Peppes Pizza has quick and friendly service. Not the ultimate Italian pizza, but good. Any of us could be soft on principles coming down tired and empty from hiking or backcountry skiing, certainly feels like a good choice at the moment.
There's one gem though, Grønolen Fjellgard. See site (no/en/de) and map.
It's a true family run small countryside hotell, going way back. Authentic and cosy atmosphere, food is always great. Lots of local classics, some crossover dishes.
Grønolen Fjellgard is mostly for residents, but you can usually call (+47 61 35 29 90) in advance and book a table for dinner.
Works just fine if you call the day before. Sometimes they have capacity even if you call the same day. Beware that this is not an à la carte restaurant, the menu is set. So you should ask what's on the menu. Either there's a 3 course dinner, with generous plates suiting their hiking guests, or they offer a buffet dinner. The latter is our favourite, being able to try a lot of delicious dishes. But the 3 course is also great if you agree to their plan.
While calling, remember to ask if dinner is at the usual 19:00.
Also consider Bygdin mountain hotel if you pass by. Used to be good some years ago. The close by smaller café Bygdinstøga has also been good, but with limited opening hours, so we have not tried it in a while.
